Kerala’s famed Aranmula Vallasadya begins on 19 July, reviving a centuries-old tradition of devotion and hospitality. As oarsmen return to the temple town, they are welcomed with spirited songs and a grand feast of over 60 dishes. The celebration embodies community, faith and generosity, making it a cultural spectacle unlike any other.

Every July, the temple town of Aranmula in Kerala transforms into a vibrant stage of devotion, tradition and community spirit. The Aranmula Vallasadya, one of the state’s most cherished cultural rituals, begins on 19 July this year, bringing together oarsmen, devotees and locals in a celebration that has endured for centuries.

The festival is inseparable from the famed snake boats of Kerala. Oarsmen, who spend weeks preparing for the legendary regattas, return to Aranmula not only to row but also to sing. Their spirited songs echo across the town, weaving together rhythm, faith and camaraderie. As they arrive, banana leaves are laid out in long rows, signalling the start of the grand feast.

The Vallasadya is no ordinary meal. It is a lavish offering of more than 60 dishes, ranging from traditional curries and pickles to sweet payasams, all served on banana leaves. Each dish is prepared with devotion, and the feast is hosted by devotees as an act of gratitude and reverence. The oarsmen, seated in rows, are served by hosts who consider the act a sacred duty.

What makes the Vallasadya unique is its spirit of inclusivity and hospitality. It is not merely a ritual but a living tradition that binds the community together. The feast is offered not to gods but to men who embody devotion through their rowing and singing. In this way, the celebration elevates human effort and collective spirit into a sacred act.

The atmosphere in Aranmula during the Vallasadya is electric. Songs of the oarsmen, the aroma of freshly prepared dishes, and the sight of hundreds gathered in harmony create an experience that transcends the ordinary. For visitors, it is a chance to witness Kerala’s cultural richness in its most authentic form. For locals, it is a reaffirmation of values that have sustained their community for generations.

As Kerala Tourism highlights this year’s Vallasadya, the event stands as a reminder of the state’s ability to blend devotion with celebration. It is not just about food or festivity, but about the deeper meaning of hospitality, gratitude and shared joy. The oarsmen’s return each year ensures that this centuries-old tradition continues to thrive, carrying forward the legacy of Aranmula’s cultural heart.
