Indian quick-service restaurant brand Wow! Momo is preparing for its first international restaurant venture in Sri Lanka, with plans for 20 outlets across the island. Backed by a local partner, the expansion signals growing global interest in Indian food brands and could create opportunities across manufacturing, logistics and exports.
India’s fast-growing quick-service restaurant sector is taking another step onto the global stage as Wow! Momo, one of the country’s most recognisable homegrown food brands, prepares to expand overseas for the first time.
The Kolkata-based chain has announced plans to enter Sri Lanka by the end of 2026, marking a significant milestone in its growth journey. The company has partnered with Sri Lankan conglomerate Softlogic Corporation to launch three initial outlets in Colombo before embarking on a wider expansion that aims to establish 20 restaurants across the country within two years.
The move comes as Wow! Momo continues to strengthen its position within India’s organised food service industry. From a modest beginning, the brand has grown into a major player with more than 900 stores spread across over 100 cities. Its products have also begun reaching international consumers through packaged-food exports to 14 countries, laying the groundwork for a broader global presence.
Sri Lanka is expected to serve as a launchpad for the company’s overseas ambitions. Beyond the island nation, Wow! Momo is actively exploring opportunities in the United Arab Emirates and the United States, two markets with sizeable South Asian communities and growing demand for diverse international cuisines.
Industry observers view the expansion as part of a wider trend in which Indian food brands are gaining confidence in exporting not only products but also retail and restaurant concepts. For decades, Indian cuisine has enjoyed a strong global following through independent restaurants and established hospitality groups. Now, organised domestic brands are increasingly seeking to build international footprints under their own identities.
The planned rollout could also create opportunities far beyond restaurant operations. A successful overseas expansion would require support from a range of businesses, including food manufacturers, frozen-food suppliers, packaging firms, cold-chain logistics providers and exporters. Franchise operators and small and medium-sized enterprises could likewise benefit as demand grows for products and services linked to the brand’s international network.
Experts note that such developments highlight the maturation of India’s food and hospitality ecosystem. As consumer-facing brands venture abroad, they bring with them supply chains, business processes and product innovations developed within the domestic market. This can help strengthen trade links while showcasing India’s entrepreneurial capabilities on the international stage.
For Sri Lankan consumers, the arrival of Wow! Momo is expected to introduce a modern, quick-service interpretation of one of South Asia’s most popular snacks. For the company, it represents an opportunity to test its business model outside India and gauge how its offerings resonate with international audiences.
The expansion underscores a broader shift in the perception of Indian food brands. Rather than remaining confined to their home market, a growing number are positioning themselves as global businesses capable of competing internationally. If Wow! Momo’s Sri Lankan venture proves successful, it could pave the way for further growth in other regions and reinforce India’s emergence as a source of globally recognised food and restaurant brands.
