The BBC has surpassed half a billion weekly global viewers for the first time, reaching 502 million across BBC News, the World Service and BBC Studios. Driven by digital transformation and major news events, the broadcaster strengthened its position as the world’s most trusted international news provider, expanding audiences by double-digit growth.
The BBC has achieved a historic milestone, growing its global audience to more than half a billion people every week for the first time since contemporary records began. Across BBC News, the BBC World Service and content distributed by BBC Studios, the organisation’s international reach has climbed to 502 million people, marking an 11 per cent increase year-on-year.
BBC News alone expanded its audience by nearly 50 million, reaching 467 million people weekly, a 12 per cent rise compared to the previous year. The BBC World Service accounted for over 70 per cent of the international audience, attracting 355 million people each week, up 14 per cent year-on-year. This surge was driven largely by the division’s digital transformation, which, combined with a succession of significant global news stories, delivered exceptional audience figures. The World Service’s digital audience grew by more than 40 per cent during the same period, underscoring the impact of its online expansion.
The BBC’s reputation as the most trusted international news provider remains intact, with the organisation continuing to rank first globally for reliability and independence. This trust has been a cornerstone of its appeal, particularly at a time when audiences worldwide are seeking credible and impartial reporting amid complex geopolitical and social developments.
Jonathan Munro, Interim CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, expressed gratitude to the teams behind the achievement. “I’d like to thank BBC teams across the world for delivering outstanding journalism just when the world needs it most,” he said, highlighting the role of journalists and content creators in sustaining the broadcaster’s global influence.
The figures reflect not only the BBC’s enduring legacy but also its adaptability in a rapidly changing media landscape. By investing in digital platforms and expanding its reach across diverse regions, the organisation has reinforced its position as a leading voice in international news. The growth signals a renewed relevance for the BBC, as it continues to shape global conversations with integrity, independence and fairness.
