Gamber Valley has introduced two new Himalayan single malt whiskies, Pravah and Tapah, each reflecting the distinctive climate and landscape of the lower Himalayas. Matured in ex-bourbon casks, the expressions showcase contrasting unpeated and peated styles while highlighting the role of provenance, altitude and temperature variation.
Gamber Valley has expanded its whisky portfolio with the launch of two new single malt expressions, Pravah and Tapah, drawing inspiration from the landscape, climate and elemental character of the lower Himalayas where the distillery is located.
The new releases continue the distillery’s focus on provenance, placing the unique conditions of its Himalayan home at the centre of the whisky-making story. Situated beside the Gamber River in Solan, the distillery benefits from an environment that producers say plays a defining role in shaping the spirit’s personality over time.
Named after words that evoke movement and energy, the two whiskies offer contrasting interpretations of Himalayan single malt. Pravah, meaning “flow”, is an unpeated expression matured in ex-bourbon casks, bottled at 46% ABV and presented in 750ml format. Tapah, translating as “inner fire”, follows the same maturation regime and strength but embraces a peated style, delivering a more smoky profile.
Pravah opens with layered malt aromas complemented by gentle vanilla, ripe banana and fresh grassy notes. A subtle hint of smoke adds complexity without overshadowing its lighter character. On the palate, rich malt flavours are joined by lingering oak, light mouth-coating oils and sweet heather honey. Delicate wisps of smoke weave through the dram before giving way to a finish marked by warm spice, honeyed barley and deep chocolate notes that linger long after the final sip.
Tapah takes a different approach, showcasing peat as a defining element. Its nose begins with gentle smoke that gradually intensifies as the whisky opens in the glass. Acacia honey and liquorice bring additional depth and balance. The palate delivers soft smoke layered over light oils, hints of molasses, warm spice and buttery vanilla. The finish is notably smooth, with lingering smoke slowly receding to reveal vanilla, warm spice and milk chocolate.
While the two expressions differ in style, both are united by the environmental conditions of their origin. According to the distillery, the Himalayan air, natural moisture and daily temperature fluctuations help accelerate and deepen the interaction between spirit and oak. With day-to-night temperature swings averaging around 15°C, the whisky experiences a dynamic maturation process that contributes to its complexity and character.
This emphasis on location reflects a growing interest among whisky producers in demonstrating how geography and climate influence maturation. In Gamber Valley’s case, the distillery argues that the lower Himalayan setting provides a distinctive backdrop that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere.
The launch of Pravah and Tapah also highlights the increasing confidence of Indian whisky makers in exploring varied flavour styles while remaining rooted in local identity. Whether through the gentle, flowing elegance of the unpeated Pravah or the smouldering intensity of Tapah, Gamber Valley’s latest releases seek to capture a sense of place in every glass, offering whisky enthusiasts a taste shaped not only by craftsmanship but also by the rhythms of the Himalayas themselves.
