India has opened applications for 200 fully funded scholarships for Sri Lankan students for the 2026–27 academic year. Available under four prestigious schemes, the awards cover UG, PG and PhD programmes in multiple disciplines, excluding medicine and law. Further details will be shared online, with queries directed to Colombo’s Education Wing.

India has announced the opening of applications for 200 fully funded scholarships for Sri Lankan nationals, marking a significant opportunity for students to pursue higher education in one of the region’s most dynamic academic landscapes. The scholarships, available for the 2026–27 academic session, are being offered under four distinguished schemes: the Nehru Memorial, Maulana Azad, Rajiv Gandhi and Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Commonwealth programmes. Together, they reflect India’s longstanding commitment to educational cooperation and cultural exchange with Sri Lanka.

The scholarships span undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies, covering a wide range of disciplines. However, programmes in medicine, paramedical studies and law are excluded, in line with the specific focus of these schemes. This ensures that students from Sri Lanka can access opportunities in fields such as science, engineering, humanities, social sciences, commerce, and technology, thereby broadening their academic horizons and enhancing career prospects. For many, the chance to study in India represents not only access to world-class institutions but also immersion in a diverse cultural and intellectual environment.

India’s scholarship initiatives for Sri Lanka have a long history, rooted in shared ties and mutual respect. The Nehru Memorial and Maulana Azad schemes, named after two of India’s most prominent leaders, highlight the country’s emphasis on education as a cornerstone of progress. The Rajiv Gandhi and Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Commonwealth scholarships further underscore India’s vision of fostering innovation, leadership and global collaboration. Each programme carries its own legacy, but collectively they serve as a bridge between the two nations, strengthening people-to-people connections and nurturing future leaders.

For Sri Lankan students, these scholarships represent more than financial support. They open doors to institutions renowned for their academic excellence, research facilities and vibrant student communities. India’s universities and colleges are increasingly recognised for their contributions to global knowledge, and the exposure gained by international students often translates into valuable skills and networks. The scholarships also cover tuition and living expenses, ensuring that talented students from diverse backgrounds can participate without financial barriers.

The announcement comes at a time when educational mobility is seen as a key driver of regional cooperation. By offering fully funded opportunities, India is reinforcing its role as a partner in Sri Lanka’s educational development. The initiative is expected to attract applicants from across the island, particularly those aspiring to pursue advanced studies in areas such as information technology, environmental science, economics, and cultural studies. The exclusion of medicine and law reflects the specialised nature of those fields, but the breadth of other disciplines ensures wide-ranging opportunities.

Applications will soon be open, with details to be published on the official website of Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Higher Education (http://mohe.gov.lk). Queries can be directed to the Education Wing of the High Commission of India in Colombo via eduwing.colombo@mea.gov.in. Prospective applicants are encouraged to prepare early, as competition for these scholarships is expected to be strong, given the prestige and comprehensive support they offer.

This initiative is part of a broader pattern of India’s educational outreach, which has consistently sought to build bridges with neighbouring countries. For Sri Lanka, the scholarships are a reminder of the enduring partnership with India, one that extends beyond politics and economics into the realm of human capital and cultural exchange. As the 2026–27 academic session approaches, the announcement is likely to generate considerable interest among students, parents and educators alike, reaffirming education as a vital link in the relationship between the two nations.
