Indian digital news organisations have emerged strongly among the finalists of WAN-IFRA’s 2026 Digital Media Awards, reflecting the country’s growing influence in innovation, audience engagement and AI-driven journalism. Their presence highlights how Indian publishers are redefining storytelling and competing confidently on the global stage.

India’s digital newsrooms have secured a prominent place among the finalists of the 2026 Digital Media Awards, organised by WAN-IFRA, underlining the country’s rising influence in shaping the future of global journalism.

Announced in March 2026, the awards shortlist recognises 278 finalists from 78 countries, selected from more than 800 entries across continents. Within this expansive and competitive field, Indian publishers have made a notable impact, particularly in categories such as audience engagement, video storytelling, data visualisation and AI-driven newsroom strategies—areas that defined this year’s competition.

The Indian finalists represent a mix of legacy media institutions and digital-native platforms, reflecting the diversity of the country’s evolving media ecosystem. Among those shortlisted are The Times of India, The Hindu, Indian Express Group, NDTV, and Jagran New Media, alongside digital-first platforms such as The Quint and Scroll.in. Regional powerhouses including Malayala Manorama’s Onmanorama and Eenadu Digital have also found a place among the finalists, highlighting the strength of vernacular journalism in India’s digital transformation.

Projects from these organisations span a wide range of innovations. Entries from The Hindu and Indian Express Group focus on data-driven storytelling and investigative formats, while Jagran New Media and NDTV have been recognised for audience engagement and product innovation. The Quint and Scroll.in, known for their explanatory journalism and multimedia storytelling, have been shortlisted for their work in creating impactful digital narratives tailored for younger, mobile-first audiences.

Equally significant is the presence of regional-language platforms such as Onmanorama and Eenadu Digital, which demonstrate how local storytelling, when combined with strong digital strategy, can achieve global recognition. Their inclusion signals a shift in global journalism where language diversity and local relevance are no longer barriers but strengths.

A defining feature of the 2026 awards is the growing importance of artificial intelligence in newsroom operations. WAN-IFRA has noted that AI is now central to how content is produced, distributed and monetised, rather than being a peripheral experiment. Several Indian finalists are part of this transformation, with projects focused on combating misinformation, enhancing personalisation and improving newsroom efficiency.

The awards process itself has been redesigned to create a unified global competition, with entries evaluated across regions before advancing to the worldwide stage. This means Indian finalists are competing directly with leading global publishers, raising both the visibility and credibility of their work.

Winners will be announced on 2 June 2026 at the World News Media Congress in Marseille, where the best projects from each region will compete for global honours. For Indian media organisations, reaching the finalist stage itself marks a significant milestone, reflecting years of investment in digital transformation and editorial innovation.

Beyond accolades, the strong Indian presence signals a deeper shift in global journalism. Indian newsrooms are no longer merely adapting to digital change; they are helping define it. From AI-led initiatives to regional storytelling that resonates globally, the finalists embody a media ecosystem that is increasingly confident, experimental and globally competitive.

As the industry grapples with questions of trust, sustainability and technological disruption, the achievements of these Indian finalists offer a compelling narrative: that innovation rooted in diversity and scale can not only survive but thrive on the world stage.
