Volvo Cars has announced the appointment of Klaus Zellmer, currently Chief Executive Officer of Škoda Auto, as its new CEO. Zellmer, a seasoned automotive leader with more than three decades of industry experience, will formally assume charge of the Swedish carmaker on 1 October 2027.

The decision marks a significant leadership transition for Volvo Cars, which has been navigating a rapidly evolving global automotive landscape shaped by electrification, digitalisation and sustainability imperatives. Zellmer’s appointment is widely seen as a strategic move to strengthen Volvo’s position in the premium segment while accelerating its transformation towards becoming a fully electric car company by 2030.

Zellmer’s career spans over 30 years across major automotive brands, where he has built a reputation for combining operational expertise with a strong focus on customer experience and brand development. His tenure at Škoda Auto has been characterised by efforts to expand the company’s global footprint, enhance product portfolios and drive innovation in mobility solutions. Prior to leading Škoda, he held senior roles at Porsche, where he contributed to strengthening the marque’s global brand identity and sales performance.

Industry observers note that Zellmer’s appointment reflects Volvo’s ambition to balance Scandinavian design and engineering excellence with global competitiveness. His international experience across Europe and beyond is expected to bring fresh perspectives to Volvo’s leadership team, particularly as the company intensifies its push into electric mobility and connected car technologies.

Volvo Cars has long positioned itself as a pioneer in safety and sustainability, and Zellmer’s leadership is anticipated to reinforce these values while steering the company through the challenges of regulatory changes, shifting consumer preferences and intensifying competition in the EV market. His arrival coincides with a crucial period for Volvo, as the brand seeks to consolidate its identity as a forward-looking, environmentally responsible automaker while maintaining profitability and growth in diverse markets.

The appointment also underscores the increasing trend of cross-brand leadership within the automotive industry, where executives with proven track records are entrusted with steering companies through transformative phases. Zellmer’s move from Škoda to Volvo highlights the fluidity of leadership talent across Europe’s automotive giants, reflecting the sector’s need for experienced leaders capable of navigating disruption and innovation simultaneously.

As Volvo Cars prepares for this transition, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how Zellmer’s leadership shapes the company’s trajectory. His blend of strategic vision, operational acumen and customer-centric approach is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding Volvo through its next chapter of growth and transformation.
