Mathrubhumi has strengthened its leadership team by inducting experienced professionals with proven track records across leading media organisations and allied industries. They bring diverse experience and will drive innovation, operational excellence, digital initiatives, organisational capabilities, and technology infrastructure.
Aby Thakaran – Deputy Editor, Mathrubhumi.com (Malayalam) With over two decades of experience across print, television, and digital media, Aby Thakaran has built a distinguished career in journalism and newsroom leadership. Prior to joining Mathrubhumi, he served as Digital Editor at 24 News and Asianet News, where he played a key role in driving digital news strategy and audience growth.
His experience also includes building editorial teams and launching print publications in Bhutan, where he served as a Reuters correspondent. Earlier in his career, he worked at The Daily Tribune in Bahrain, further broadening his exposure to international media.
Vipin Vijayan – Deputy Editor, Mathrubhumi.com (English) – With over 22 years of experience in digital and television journalism, Vipin Vijayan has built a distinguished career across some of India’s leading media organisations. He began his career as an intern with The Indian Express and All India Radio, before joining United News of India (UNI) as a Trainee Editor, later moving to the news desk at Rediff.com, where he strengthened his expertise in digital journalism.
During his 12-year tenure at Rediff.com in Mumbai, he worked with some of the country’s most respected editors, gaining extensive experience in digital journalism, newsroom management, and national news coverage.
In 2017, he transitioned to television journalism by joining the founding team at Republic TV in Mumbai as a News Editor, where he gained deep exposure to broadcast news operations and the fast-paced dynamics of television journalism.
Leveraging this experience, he returned to digital media as Editor of the English vertical at Asianet News, where he played a key role in strengthening its national digital presence and establishing it as a credible destination for news audiences across India.
At Mathrubhumi, he will be responsible for building strong, credible digital news products across platforms and formats.
Gayatri Gopakumar – Head, Human Resources (TRD – Television, Radio & Digital) – Gayatri Gopakumar brings extensive experience in human resources leadership across leading Indian media and broadcasting organisations, including Mathrubhumi, Asianet News, and Malayala Manorama, along with experience in the IT industry.
Her expertise spans talent acquisition, employee engagement, learning and development, organisational development, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and end-to-end HR strategy.
At Mathrubhumi, she will lead Human Resources across Television, Radio, and Digital businesses, aligning talent strategy across converging media verticals, fostering a high-performance culture, and supporting business growth through a forward-looking, technology-enabled people strategy as the organisation expands its digital footprint.
Karthikeyan K – Lead, Technology & Innovation – Karthikeyan is an accomplished technology and product leader with over 18 years of experience, including more than a decade in senior leadership roles, specialising in building scalable digital platforms and high-performing engineering teams. His experience spans diverse domains, including EdTech, media, e-commerce, content management systems (CMS), and platform engineering across both startup environments and large-scale product organisations.
Prior to joining Mathrubhumi, he served as Head of Technology at THG Publishing Pvt. Ltd. (The Hindu Group). His earlier roles include leadership positions at Grade Results Technologies Pvt. Ltd. and Magzter Digital Pvt. Ltd., where he led the development and scaling of multiple digital and consumer-facing platforms.
He brings deep technical expertise across AWS, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Python, PHP, ReactJS, AI agents, and automation. He has successfully built and scaled EdTech and media platforms leveraging generative AI and Google Vertex AI for applications such as question-answering systems, language assessment, and content intelligence. He has also led mobile application and product initiatives for large-scale consumer platforms, including a news application with over 10 million downloads.
In his new role, he will be responsible for defining and executing Mathrubhumi’s digital technology vision and long-term architecture, with a focus on content creation, distribution, and monetisation.
