The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) community is celebrating a proud milestone as Shape of Momo, directed by Tribeny Rai, releases theatrically across India and Nepal on 29 May 2026. The film’s journey from the Film Bazaar 2024 Work in Progress Lab to becoming a Busan award-winning feature backed by Spirit Media has been nothing short of remarkable, marking its place in global independent cinema.
Already decorated with international honours, Shape of Momo has won the Best Jury Award and Audience Choice Award for Best Narrative Film at the Indie Meme Film Festival in Austin, Texas, the Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle Film Festival, and the Grand Jury Prize at the 24th Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. These accolades underscore its resonance with audiences and critics alike, affirming its artistic and narrative strength.
The film also carries the support of acclaimed filmmakers Payal Kapadia, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti as executive producers, further cementing its stature within the creative industry. For FTII, the release is a moment of pride, as alumni have played pivotal roles in shaping the film. Kislay (Editing, 2009 Batch) contributed as writer, editor, and producer; Archana Ghangrekar (2011 Batch) served as cinematographer; and Uttam Mondal (2016 Batch) brought his expertise as production designer. Their collective efforts highlight the institute’s enduring influence on contemporary cinema.
The theatrical release is not only a celebration of Tribeny Rai’s vision but also a testament to the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking. With its international recognition and strong creative backing, Shape of Momo is poised to captivate audiences across India and Nepal, adding another chapter to the growing global impact of Indian cinema.
