Karnataka’s Cabinet has granted in-principle approval for the Bengaluru–Hyderabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, a transformative infrastructure project expected to cut travel time between the two cities to about two hours. The fully elevated rail line, spanning three states, is positioned as a major boost to regional connectivity, commerce and investment.

The Karnataka government has taken a significant step towards reshaping intercity travel in southern India, granting in-principle approval to the ambitious Bengaluru–Hyderabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, a project that promises to connect two of the country’s leading technology and business hubs in just two hours.

Planned as a fully elevated high-speed rail line stretching between 607 and 626 kilometres, the corridor is designed for trains operating at speeds of up to 350 kmph. Once completed, the project is expected to dramatically reduce the existing rail journey time of eight to twelve hours between Bengaluru and Hyderabad, positioning the route among India’s most advanced transport links.

The proposed alignment will pass through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, reflecting the growing push for integrated regional infrastructure across southern India. Officials believe the corridor could stimulate economic activity, strengthen industrial supply chains and encourage greater mobility between emerging urban centres along the route.

Within Karnataka, approximately 101 kilometres of the corridor will traverse Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru and Chikkaballapur districts. The inclusion of Devanahalli, near Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, as a key station is expected to further enhance the strategic importance of the project, potentially creating a high-speed transport gateway linking aviation, business and urban transit networks.

Other planned stations include Alipur in Gauribidanur, Kodihalli, Hindupur, Anantapur, Kurnool and Mahbubnagar, creating a corridor that extends economic opportunity beyond the two metropolitan endpoints. Analysts suggest the rail line could accelerate development in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities by improving access to investment, employment and trade.

The project remains in the surveying and planning stage, with detailed project reports currently being finalised. Authorities have indicated that the decision to construct the entire route as an elevated corridor is intended to minimise land acquisition challenges and reduce disruption to existing settlements and agricultural areas.

The approval comes amid India’s broader push to expand high-speed rail infrastructure following the development of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project. As state governments increasingly compete to secure future-ready transport networks, the Bengaluru–Hyderabad corridor is being viewed as a statement of intent for the next phase of economic integration in southern India.

If realised on schedule, the line could redefine business travel and commuter expectations between the two cities, creating what supporters describe as a new economic spine linking Karnataka and Telangana while strengthening connectivity across the wider Deccan region.
